Art of Élan

New Amsterdam is excited to partner with Art of Élan, a pioneering chamber music series which seeks to bring unique music events and the excitement of classical music to diverse audiences. For their 10th Anniversary season, Art of Élan has named NewAm's own NOW Ensemble as their ensemble-in-residence, which involves performance opportunities, commissioning opportunities, and possible recording support for the ensemble.

Throughout the season, NOW Ensemble will be engaging with the San Diego community in a number of ways including a free concert at The San Diego Museum of Art (May 9, 2017) and outreach activities in National City with students from Art of Élan's annual collaboration with A Reason to Survive (ARTS) called Young Artists in Harmony (spring of 2017). They will also be part of Art of Élan's collaboration with Malashock Dance (June 1-3, 2017, Lyceum Theatre) where they will present the world premiere by NewAm co-founder and co-artistic director Judd Greenstein, written specifically for NOW Ensemble and Malashock Dance.

Additionally, 2016-17 season marks the return of Art of Élan's CROSSFIRE Series at The Glashaus. This event will feature selections from Daniel Wohl's Corps Exquis, released on New Amsterdam in 2013, and the world premiere of AJ Nilles' "Beat Suite no. 2."

Created by violinist Kate Hatmaker and flutist Demarre McGill, Art of Élan is continually expanding the scope of classical music in San Diego through innovative, one-hour programming in unique performance venues.

Kate Hatmaker says of the partnership: "We are excited about engaging in this bi-coastal conversation with our friends at New Amsterdam, who share our artistic vision of supporting new music by highly skilled composers and performers who do not adhere to traditional genre boundaries. They, like us, value artistic quality and emotional directness over adherence to current stylistic trends."
