New Amsterdam Presents is pleased to announce the second edition of the Apples & Olives Festival in Zürich, Switzerland. Taking place from March 2-4 in two clubs, EXIL and Moods, the festival will showcase unsuspected connections between newly composed music, avant-garde pop, improvised sounds and jazz. Co-presented by NewAm with EXIL and classYcal, the festival is curated by three transatlantic co-artistic directors: Judd Greenstein (New Amsterdam), Nik Bärtsch (Exil) and Etienne Abelin (classYcal). In addition, the second edition of Apples & Olives takes on a truly multi-national nature, presenting artists from America and across Europe, including from France, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The festival will open with the very best of the Swiss indie-classical scene: the emergent singer and composer Marena Whitcher with her duo Whitcher & Stocker, and the unconventional Kaleidoscope String Quartet with virtuosic playing between classical and jazz.
It will continue on March 3 with three musicians from cutting-edge German record label ECM creating a world of wonderful melancholia: pianist Saskia Lankhoorn performs compositions by Kate Moore, and the duo Anja Lechner & François Couturier crosses the boundaries of East and West.
An array of different styles will conclude the festival on the last evening: contemporary percussion compositions played by the Swiss Ensemble this | Ensemble that (ET | ET), which will be followed by music from David T. Little. Following that will be the Dutch Ensemble Perforator presenting their project “Backbones,” consisting of composed and improvised modules from Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Julia Holter, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), Judd Greenstein, Daniel Wohl and Nik Bärtsch. Lastly, Swedish Indie Pop Band Loney Dear will play a set of multilayered arranged songs together with the Apples & Olives ensemble.
